They say that the eyes are the windows to the soul—and Justin Bieber has been doing a heck of a lot of soul-searching lately...

That, and Ellen appearances.

With the premiere of the Comedy Central Roast of Justin Bieber (aka The Night of 1,000 Winces) just hours away, Bieber is letting it be known that he approached the roast as a sort of exorcism for the bratty pop star of yore as he continues to figure out the type of man he wants to be.

And who says only hindsight is 20/20?

Asked what his friends might say has been the biggest change in him as he starts this new chapter, Bieber told USA Today in a new interview that it would have to be...his eyes?!

"You know how you can tell a person by their eyes, their intentions and where they're at?" the 21-year-old explained. "Well, my eyes changed, they got softer and brighter. They're open. I have more of a grasp of who I am at this point."

So he's talking an actual, physical difference in how his organs of vision look to others. (But better than hard, dim and half-closed, right?)

"I'm growing, figuring some stuff out. As you do when you grow up," Bieber told the paper. "You figure out what type of man you want to be, that's where I'm at."

And while he says he's not looking for a girlfriend at the moment because he's so focused on self-improvement at the moment, he's always zeroing in on the type of young lady he'd like to be with.

"I'm just trying to make sure I'm 100 percent so I can add to the person I want to be with," Bieber said. "I want a girl I can trust, who I can lean on. This business is hard, and I want someone I can confide in."

Bieber also insists that this turning over of a new leaf is a real thing—and that he has battled through some tough times, regardless of the folks who think he couldn't possibly have a care in the world.

"Unless you're stupid, I don't think you would think it's easy to be who I am," Bieber said. "Just use your head, you'll understand that my life is not easy. Not having privacy. Growing up in front of the cameras since I was 13, 14.

"You need to have those mess-ups without anyone judging you, and that's not something I was able to do. I think that people realize, they see it now, the transition. We can talk and do interviews and I can say I'm in a better place, but until they see the walk, and see the transition come to life, that's what's really going to matter."

And he's exactly right. The Comedy Central Roast of Justin Bieber gets underway at 10 p.m.
