Is there anything Celine Dion can't do?
In July, the 48-year-old singer wowed Jimmy Fallon when she impersonated fellow pop stars Cher, Rihanna and Sia during a game of musical impressions on The Tonight Show. And on Monday's episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Dion put her own spin on a few rap songs, including Missy Elliott's "Work It," LMFAO's "Shots (feat. Lil' Jon)" and Nelly's "Hot in Herre."
"You sing these ballads all the time," Ellen DeGeneres explained. "I want you to keep growing as an artist, so we put some rap songs in the prompter. All you have to do is sing the words."
Dion began with "Hot in Herre," and the audience lapped it up. But Dion wasn't as keen on her live performance. "What is that?" she asked DeGeneres. "My career is going to end tonight." After singing "Shots," Dion decided to give Britney Spears' "Work Bitch" a musical makeover. Then came her soulful cover of "Work It," complete with all the scatting you could ever want.
Speaking to DeGeneres in a separate segment, Dion revealed how her family is coping with the loss of her late husband, René Angélil. "It is tough, I have to admit," the singer admitted. "It's part of our life, and life has imposed this on him. That was his destiny and I still feel extremely fortunate that he has given me three magnificent children—wonderful pieces of luggage."
With her Las Vegas residency back in full swing and a new album out, Dion said she is grateful "to feel confident and to have experience enough and to keep going" after Angélil's death. She is doing "well" because her husband is no longer in pain, as he had been for many years. "The hardest thing is not to lose somebody you love, but to see them suffer," Dion explained. "So, for me to know that he is in a place where he doesn't suffer anymore makes me feel way better."
Dion added that she is "most proud" of how she "prepared" her kids for Angélil's passing, as she showed them both "how to live with dad" and also "how to live with him without his presence."
