An American firm, Bristow Helicopters, will be taking over the search and rescue operations from the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy as part of a £1.6 billion deal, NBC reports.
The plan calls for the retiring of the Sea King helicopters, which have flown almost 15,000 rescue missions in the last 40 years.
The Duke of Cambridge himself has been piloting the helicopters for the last three years from RAF Valley on Angelsey in North Wales.
However, the royal, along with hundreds of others, will eventually be replaced by civilians when the new deal takes effect in 2015.
